Following the US elections and watching the primaries transform America’s political landscape has been very exciting, yet the contrast with our own election process couldn’t be more different. Watching the potential American candidates debate policy, voting records, their experience, and why they would be better candidates to serve their nation. For me even more important is the involvement by average people in the entire process, because they know how deeply their lives will be impacted if they choose the wrong leader. The participation rates in the US primaries are at an all time high in modern history because of the mess George Bush has made in eight years and, of course, the Obama phenomenon. This contrasts starkly with our own upcoming elections, where voter turnout is expected to be lower than usual and one of Pakistan’s most popular leaders was assassinated in December.
