After much pondering about why I'm so passionate about writing...why it's the only thing I can fathom doing for the rest of my life, it comes down to this: I've felt hopelessly misunderstood for as long as I can remember, and it occured to me that the only time that being 'understood' really doesn't matter is when I write. A little piece of paper taped to my monitor says it best: "BE HONEST. Concentrate on what you have to say, not on what people will think of it."
