My mother found me many times asleep in the shower, where I would go to write. I would put a blanket down in the shower floor, step in, close the door and start writing.

As a young girl, I used to shut the world out to write.

My husband found me many times in the middle of the night scribbling furiously on scrap paper. "Come to bed," he would say.

As a newlywed, I went to bed and didn't feel the need to write.

My children came along and found me many times asleep if I sat down for just a moment. But not very often did they see me write.

As a mother, I just didn't have the time to write.

One day, not to long ago, I found myself when cleaning out drawers. I came upon page after page of words I had once labored over to make sure each one said what it should.

As myself, redefined by life, marriage, motherhood and divorce, I pull from my world to write, again.
