Writing is almost as much a part of of me as breathing: it is more than mere passion, yet sometimes feels as elusive as the early morning mist. Of all the disciplines - short stories, essays, novels, songwriting - poetry is my first love. It is the most intimate expression of the soul, the most personal and revealing. And, therefore, the most daunting.

In my reading (an equal passion), I was weaned on Shakespeare, Byron, Keats, Shelley, Dickens and discovered others like Voltaire and Hardy, Emily Dickinson and Elizabeth Barrett Browning as I went along. But my collection of books does not revolve around Old Masters: Terry Pratchett and Jasper Fforde are current favourites, and my collection includes Robert Scott and Jay Gordon (I have penchant for good quality sci-fi/fantasy), as well as little finds like a turn of the century collection of love letters between figures from history. (Some of my happiest moments have been spent in old and musty bookshops foraging for some quirky little find. There is something almost erotic in that moment when a long forgotton and unopened book is finally opened, when the smell of old paper tickles the nose, and the words of a long deceased author find suddenly an eager pair of eyes to read them. You can't do that at Amazon.com!).

As for me - well, I am a Christian down to my bones, but it took me some years to re-discover that part of myself and though I am frequently told I must therefore not think for myself, I would beg to differ. God gave us brains, good ones: thinking for oneself is not a glitch in the programming.

My age is unimportant: what I look like is irrelevent. I love God, my children, my family and friends - and I love to read, and to write. Faith, hope and love abide these three; and the greatest of these is love.
