The only way to sooth a colic baby is walking the baby, in your arms, for hours on end. As a result of all the walking, pampering and special care demanded by colic babies, a close bond grew between Keith Andrews and his two daughters. Then, since Olivia, his youngest daughter, had to do a fair spell of babysitting during her high school years, he convinced her to write down, or rather, allow him to write down, her memoirs as a babysitter.
The humorous and witty descriptions of certain aspects of the procreation cycle reflect Keith and Olivia’s unstinting love of life. The word mundane does not exist for this father-daughter team. They see the funny side – although long after the fact – even in the trying aspects of the procreation cycle such as colic babies, the noise produced by little boys, the smells and the sheer volume of increased toil and drain on the family fortune immediately following upon the departure of the stork.
Keith’s experience as Toastmaster and ordained minister in the Anglican Church, and his background in biochemical research, stood him in good stead while writing Babysitting and All That. Olivia, his co-writer, editor, and inspiration, a lecturer in psychology and animal behaviour science, also did a fair amount of the research for the book. She is still involved in promoting the book, assisting her dad in replying to all the questions raised, as well as trying to extinguish all the fires kindled by the book.
