there is a new one cooking -

potentially my most important to date.

Now, on with the 'About Me'....

Don’t come here looking for a straightforward career progression!

Dairy farmer in Northumberland, futures broker and stockbroker in the City of London, university lecturer & Professor of English in South Korea, Asian researcher, project director for an intranet software firm, strategist at Razorfish and, most recently, management consultant for Ideas Unlimited, consulting to some very large global corporations, often at board level.

In addition to these wildly varying stints of employment, I’ve has also run a number of businesses over the years, in areas as diverse as retailing mobile phones, exporting motorcycle accessories to the USA, exporting the old red UK phone boxes to Switzerland, conducting environmental assessments for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), renovating and letting property in Belfast, and selling soap.

As for the things I’ve achieved over the last few years…

I've renovated a beautiful farmhouse in southern France; I've written two books and am working on a third; I've run leadership training events all over Europe; I've gained an MBA from a top UK business school; I've won a 52-mile walking race; I've learned to scuba dive; I've left full-time employment and now divide my time between writing and freelance consulting work, mainly in the areas of leadership coaching and training, internal communications and change management.

Today I find myself well paid for the occasional work I chose to do, debt-free, happy, living in a paid-for house, fit, with lots of friends, and a wonderful family. What more could a man ask for??

Outside of 'work' I cycle, practice yoga and qi gong, read too much, run too little, and enjoy the challenge of striking a balance between enjoying his own space in solitary, beautiful places….and becoming a lonely old git!

For a couple of insights into my psyche, consider…

  • My favourite footwear is a pair of cowboy boots; the older the better

  • My favourite drink neat vodka, straight from the freezer.  Or Long Island Iced Tea (the cocktail) when he's feeling flush

  • My favourite poem is by the Scottish poet, William McGonagall (1830-1902)

"There was a coo

Upon a hill.

It's not there noo.

It musta shifted."

I aspire to such genius.

Why do I blog? Well, it's good discipline for me as a writer to get something written each day, even if it's only a ramble. Having an audience is definitely a plus. And getting paid is a virtually unheard-of bonus! So I hope y'all enjoy yourselves within;
