And in answer to your question, its easy to get to #10 or better in several categories, though doing so may not help your overall ranking or earnings much at first.
Make a list of the categories you're most interested in -- that you feel you could do a decent job with. Decide how often you think you might be able to post to the categories you're interested in. Then check out the categories on your list. Look at the posting dates and times for each category's Top 10. If most of them are being posted to daily, it'll be a tough nut to crack without working hard at it. But if several of the blogs haven't had a post in several days you've got a likely candidate. Double check to make sure that #11 through #25 have a similar or even less frequent posting history. Now check the overall rank of the category's top blogs. If you start running into ranks over #300 long before you work your way down to #10 in the category you've got a winner.
Decent writing and posting at least once every couple of days should get you into the category's Top 10 within a few days, 10 days at most. Posting daily will probably have you fighting for one of the Top 3 spots in short order. Skipping a few days won't hurt your category ranking much and a little self-promotion in one of your other blogs should help keep you near the top. After a while you'll be able to post as infrequently as two or three times a week and stay near, if not within, the Top 10 for the category unless it suddenly gets hot.
