Be nice, T99

You don't have to remind me how bad the Tigers were last year.  I'm a life-long Tiger fan and I lived through every disMAL moment of it.  But I'm a home-team rooter, not a basher.  I'm also the eternal optimist.  I'm entitled to dream -- even when the dream is a little far-fetched.  Besides, this year's edition of the Tigers doesn't even resemble last year's team.  Three guys who were good enough to start last year will be sitting on the bench this year.  A fourth was traded for a far superior player.  The new regulars range from above average to legitimate superstar (Pudge).  Most of the subs are better than half of last season's starters.  Their joke of a pitching staff included three guys who should have been in the minors.  And they were the best of the lot!  This year they are proven vets who have been joined by a legitimate ML caliber starter in Johnson.  Even the bullpen is vastly improved.  They may not be a .500 team yet, but they're a damn sight closer than most people give them credit for.  Add to that the fact that they play in the worst division in baseball and anything can happen.  Need I remind anyone that the last two world champions could not even win their division during the regular season?

I love you anyway, Gal.  Give me a little attention and talk sports to me and I'm yours!  Ahem...can you cook too?

The Tigers in 2003 were DISMAL

with the worst record in decades of the entire league - BOTH leagues, actually.

They might recover to be a .500 team, although I doubt it.  But definitely NOT World Series....the only appearances they are going to be doing there is in the stands, cheering on the Yankees and whoever else makes it this year.   (And I *hate* the Yankees - I'm not saying that because I love 'em so much)

missyj
I apologize if my words gave the impression that your enthusiasm for the Tigers' prospects was as unbridled as my own.  I was just grateful for the fact that someone other than myself thought they had a chance to beat anyone.  I can't help but remember 1997 when a Tiger team not as improved as this one went from league worst batting, fielding, and pitching in '96 to a respectable 79 wins and a 3rd place finish in the very competitive AL East.  I think the upside for this year's team is at least as good.  Thanks for your support and your always perceptive comments.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say a division championship!
And I wouldn't say .500 either. But, they are improved and should show it. I think it's possible they can finish ahead of Cleveland and avoid last. I'm pulling for them just the same.
