It is strange really, we all originated more or less in the same way, but mob rule strengthens inhibitions.🦋

Thank you for sharing. Many people tend to act like those of European descent who came here (in particular Italians in this case) did not face racism when in fact they did.

I always loved Columbus Day when I was a schoolkid. Our teachers included it in their history lessons - and I was quite disappointed to learn that Christopher Columbus didn't actually set foot on what later became American soil, but some place south of here. I don't know why some people get all bent out of shape and hateful toward ethnic groups other than their own - we can learn so much from anyone whose culture and experience is different from our own - not to mention music, food, the way we look at life...

Sherri - Thank you.

How well I know that from my mother's side in your neck of the woods. She told all about it, being Polish, Irish, Scot, and English. A tale of tragedy for another time. And did you know the first slaves in what would be this country were Poles? They were skilled woodworkers and were sent here on English ships to build furniture. There is a memorial sign to them in I think the Carolinas.

Thank you for bringing this to light. Many of the European immigrants were subject to long hours for very little pay when they came to America. Italians, Irish, Scottish, Slovaks, and Germans worked our coal mines here in Pennsylvania under dangerous conditions. We have monuments with the names of those who were killed during explosions and mine cave-ins.
