Yes, that seems about right. As I wrote to TAPS, this sentence may be a case of "lost in translation." I think the word translated as improve may have originally had a meaning in Greek or Latin as advance (improve=advance). Epictetus was born a slave and taken in the context of speaking as a slave or about a slave or slavery at that time, the sentence would make more sense. to me, i.e.; don't act too smart around your master. It's kinda like that at work these days. Open-mouthed smile That is, don't act smarter than your boss
