It reminds me of an episode of Frasier where Frasier is mad at his son playing his handheld video game console during a camping trip. Frasier's father points out that Frasier did the same with a book years earlier.
I believe the phone has the potential to be more annoying if people are using the sound.

I expect both are conversation busters, but Oh I do enjoy a good book sometimes. As for the Iphone we tend to be on the at the same time.
