Re: Re: It makes sense that Ohio would have them too.

Sassy, I think you are right.  I know there are mines in West Virginia and I wonder if they made toilets in the basements there?  I've seen pictures of the miners and I would say they would need to get cleaned up before dinner.  This makes perfect sense when I think about it.

That's fascination. Not too much privacy there.

Up until the 1940s or so, a lot of Baltimore rowhouses still used outhouses.

Anywhere there are steel mills or mining, I guess that this would have been a thing.

Good Morning

Sassy, this morning I was waiting for the coffee to brew and I decided to check out the blogs I missed last night.  Roy was still home and this was the first blog I read.  I found this post so interesting.  I showed Roy and he said the older homes around Cleveland have toilets like this in the basements.  He said it was very common to see this in homes built in that era.  I've learned something new because I had no idea these could be found in basements. He said some people would build walls around the facilities but not always.  I've never seen anything like this.  I was thinking probably the men that worked at the steel mills would come home and enter through the basement.  I know they would be a mess along with their clothes when their shift ended.  The wives were probably thankful they cleaned up before coming upstairs for dinner.  My next thought is I wonder how they got the work clothes clean.  I know they could hang the work clothes outside once they were washed but how in the world did they get the stains out of the clothes.  It's a mystery to me.  Great post!  I hope you have a good day.
