You are right. There were so many places that this story could have gone right, but at each juncture, it went wrong. Even where I just left off, the final outcome would have not happened. The *system* failed this boy, and thus his family, at every turn.
This was based on an actual situation where the same failures and outcomes occurred. It didn't need to happen that way, but it did.

The best a friend could do. Of course, if RJ had been offered a decent job one wonders if it would not have come to this. Still chancy though.
