I am usually a pantser, but like a project that I am slowly working on in the background, I have to pull all the way back to set the landscape for the story. I make notes on what City A looks like vs. what Village B looks like. I usually assign the name of a real place or town to the make-believe cities to ensure that I always describe the area in the story as it is in reality. That gives me consistency.

I do the same thing with the characters in the story. My main female character will be based on a real-life person I know, so her characteristics will always be the same. If I make it after Lisa, everything my character does will be based on what Lisa would do. It keeps me from having to develop a massive character bio to follow. I just use Lisa's looks, attitude, and behaviors when making my character 'act-out' in the story. Again, if Lisa would do it, my character would do it.

You may or may not have watched the HBO series, 'Game of Thrones' or simply, 'GoT.' That series was based on a series of books. My eyes have steadily lost the ability to read a set font size, thus eliminating me from reading real books. On my Kindle, I can increase the font size, allowing me to read. Anyway, GoT is based on a massive make-believe landmass, and could even imagine the notes you would have to keep to keep each scene consistent with the one 87 pages previous?

Everyone develops what works for them. This is what I do.
Thanks!

I did a couple of the NaNoWriMo writes using the pantz technique,

but then I found if I had a rough outline, and ending in mind, and a fairly good idea of the characters and their backstory, the whole thing went better. I hope your wife's project goes well - I think your ideas for helping are very workable.
