Immediately after Shakespeare who represented an age all by himself, so too was Milton with remarkable range of different poetic styles. His commend over the English Language, especially with biblical ornament was beyond par . Thank you sassyass.

In those days even a layman knew enough about the Bible, so the allusions were comprehensible to the common folk too. To be trained in religion to become a clergyman or one of the ecclesiastical order was considered high and venerable.

I suppose poems such as this were read only by those who had been educated to the state of the time. Common folk as they were called Were presumably enlightened if at all by religious factors or the gentry.  Good work.
