Re:

FSI, I'm lost when I lose the internet, electricity, water, or gas.  I cannot imagine having to wash clothes without a machine.  I have so many clothes to do every week that I just don't know what I would do.  I do have 3 washboards hanging in the backroom for decoration but If I had to use them I'd be lost.

Pat, I also admire the power company linemen.  I don't know what we would do without them.  I never like to hear about bad storms and I hope that you are okay.

I can't imagine what the pioneers went through roughing it the way they did. Today, even though I spent the first 12 years of my life without Internet, I feel so lost when it's down.

Re:

Kabu, Oh my, that's a lot of work.  When my three kids were little they were all allergic to plastic diapers so I had to use cloth.  That was a lot of work too.  My boys were 18 months apart so for a while I had two in diapers.  I was so young at the time and never thought much about it.  I just did what I had to do.  When I think back on that time we did save a lot of money.  Diapers are so much money now.

heavy labour from dawn to dust and there was no take home at the end of a long day. Meals had to be prepared and cooked. For awhile many years ago when my boys were still babies I had to boil my clothes in a copper boiler heated with wood and dip them out of the water with a wooden stick into cold water and pput them through a hand ringer and then hang them on a line. It was a lot of work.

And to answer your question, yes, I think there are a lot of trees around here, especially considering it isn't rural exactly. For a city-type area there are a lot of green spaces.

Enjoy your day and I hope the weather is pleasant. It's very cool here.

Good afternoon

Thank goodness for our modern conveniences. Of course, back then they didn't miss it because they knew nothing of future conveniences that we have now. Reading in the near dark, bathing in very little water, and scrubbing clothes until your knuckles bled had to make for a rough life. Your gnomes are such happy little guys. They will love the beef soup after they get back. It is mild and cooler here today too. I welcome it after yesterday's heatwave and high humidity. I have used up all of my leftovers, so I have to run to the store later today.

Because of the storms, there were 1500 or so in the St. Louis area

without power - our news crew was describing the downed trees, etc., and all power was to be restored by late last night. I so admire those power company linemen who are working in hazardous conditions and with "hot" wires. Coolest day in weeks here today, and calm. Great first day of summer.  I hope your troops come back with lots of good energy and a public service mission that does their leader credit.
