My mom told me about when people did that with the flour sacks. I was a little girl and it was quite a surprise to learn.

I saw a little gipsy girl her coat was a plain hessian sack. I could see chicken feed on the back.

There were lots of kids wearing flowered prints when I was little.
Moms baked a lot of their own bread and in those days nothing was wasted.

Yes! I learned about this from my mother who used to make dresses from the pretty fabric flour sacks. What a really innovative thing this was in our history.
