Sad for him. Painful too. Did he use pesticides back them? I can see you MIL was always going to be how she was. Great story!

A hard life for the poor chap and then this. So many were killed in WW1. Whole villages lost nearly all their young men, I suppose they were mostly infantry in the trenches.

I had missed these posts. We are so troubled by the kind of life we are forced to lead due to the pandemic....but people back then had such difficult day to day lives...it's a tough journey for this family too & when sickness strikes the strongest are shattered.

Family life on the farm was never easy. You remind me of stories Mother used to tell us.

Well told!

Great life story, so clear and matter-of-fact. I love the tone of this, and can identify with both the reality  and the hope and sweetness that softens it.

Good Morning

These are certainly trying times for everyone. The War was devastating for so many people. This family had their fair share of problems and to have to endure sickness was certainly a hardship for all of them.  I know the one thing that will pull them through is the fact that they are a strong family that believes in God.  Fortunately, the older boys could help keep the farm going.  I know Evva was missing her beau but I'm sure all the chores around the farm were keeping her very busy during these turbulent times. I cannot imagine how they felt living through a war and having their beloved Father suffering in so much pain. My heart goes out to all of them.

They certainly do have their share of hard times. That cancer diagnosis is bound to rock the family off of their axis. World War I ravaged many families, my great-grandfather included.
