I read this in horror! How in blazes did someone like that ever get to keep teaching!!! First of all, besides being borderline cruel, he gave the class(es) the message that in sports the important thing is to win - at any cost. Further, the loser, therefore, is to be humiliated and punished by doing pushups or whatever. In sports, the idea is to learn the game, then to play the game, and in team sports to learn what exactly constitutes a team. If one excels, fine. If not, fine.  Rrhh. I'm so sorry you had a coach like that.

I believe this teacher was too old, no longer up for the job. I am sure you became very fit with him bullying you all but to make the losing team do push ups. No that sounds like Boot camp to me! (Protective Grandma here LOL)

I love tennis but I never played soccer.  I feel bad that you had to experience a teacher like this.  I think he was tired of teaching by the time he got to your class.  He had a serious attitude problem and did not consider how the kids in the gym felt about what they were doing.

I don't remember soccer being played yet.

Not all coaches get that the various sports were not created equal, nor was the human who had to perform them. Kids in P.E. should be allowed to choose the sport that they excel at the best, but I guess that you can never know until you give it a shot.
