Perhaps a private, non-confrontational discussion with him eoukd help. Explain to him hat exactly are the things that he must let someone know about right away.

I think Don likes to do things his way and he really doesn't see the big picture. Since he's a good employee I wouldn't want to fire him. I'm also sure he doesn't want to bother your Dad with mechanical problems. I think the best solution is to sit down with Don and explain to him why he has to follow the tried and true procedures when something goes wrong.

It would appear that he wants to make the decisions by being in charge of this particular operation. What he fails to realize is that he is not in charge. He needs to be pulled aside and told that it is unacceptable. If he continues it would fall under insubordination. At my hubby's job, they get wrote up for not following company procedures and regulations. Three write-ups and they are fired.
