Once an officer held out his arm, blocking me on a highway island, for a multi town and county high speed chase. The driver crashed into a street pole. The officer saved my life

Circumstances dear Bill. Sometimes decisions probably dictate what is justifiable.

I think it should be up to the officer involved.  It just depends on the situation.  If a child was kidnapped I would say do whatever you have to do to get the child back.

As long as the police proceed with caution they should do whatever it takes to stop a criminal who is racing around wildly. In many cases, without the chase, they will allow the criminal to get away.
