I have heard that about potatoes also.

Sassy, I really had no idea that our apples could be a year old when we buy them.  That made me stop and think for just a minute.  My grandparents had a fruit cellar on the farm.  It always smelled funny like a damp smell.  I'm not sure what it was.  I know it was cool even in the heat of the summer.

That was not a bad deal for you. Those farmers eat well and work hard.

I wasn't a farm girl, just a foster child in a temporary setting while mom was getting medical care. It was all so new to me I was fascinated - and we ate very well on the farm. I grew 3 or 4 inches in height, gained about 30 pounds.

It is interesting to learn about our food, and how it is grown, stored, and canned. Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea.

The year I lived on the farm, they had a storage room built over a small

branch of the creek - there were screen windows and the normal air flow through the little hutch, along with packing the apples, potatoes & other root veggies in dry sand, kept the fall harvest in good shape for most of the winter. They also canned a lot of their produce.
