It is really good to remember the gentle and kind folk. You have had to adapt so much, and always made the best of things. Take care

The second mother-in-law sounds like she was a great woman who could relate to you very well. Sad about your first mother-in-law.

Someone likes her father-in-law better than her husband.

I also had a nightmare first MIL and a really good second one.

The first was like yours, using Jesus and the Bible to justify her overbearing criticism. The second was better to me than my own mom was, and after one dispute we had to clear the air, she was always good as gold, and a wonderful grandmother to my kids. Maybe we grew up a little and were grateful for all kindnesses after the first.

I agree with sassy. My first mother in law was frigid. She never smiled. Didn't deem me worthy to talk with  at all.

A good mother-in-law is a true blessing.

Your Greek mother-in-law was a real treasure. I am pretty lucky too, my husband's mother and I get along well.

Kabu, I love reading about your memories.  This reminded me of something that came across on our police blotter last week.  It said that the officers were called to a home because the lady heard voices.  She said sometimes they were outside and sometimes they were in the house with her.  The officers wrote down the report and when they got to the end the lady looked at them and said maybe it was the voices I hear in my own head.  When I read this I was sad for the lady and the officers.  I can just imagine how they were feeling and they wouldn't know what to do except possibly take the woman to the hospital.  I wonder how many times in a day this same exact thing happens to other people.  Mental illness is a hard thing to deal with for everyone.
