Re: Annicita

The decision to build the Edwardsville campus of SIU was made in the late 1950's, the scouting and chopper flights in late '59 - the house was dismantled and construction began in early 1960, which was when I started to work for the university. I visited the site with my boss, walked through the house and horse stables shortly before the construction began. For the first year or so they operated on the Alton campus of the former Shurtleff college - it later became the dental school. Temp. offices were set up in former residences and farm houses on the fringes of the 2,600-acre site.

I do understand how the owner felt.  I also understand that the University is a place where so many can go to learn and get degrees.  It's a sign of our times!  That is up until 2020 and the COVID.  Now I'm not sure what is right and what is wrong.

It brought tears to my heart to read of those horrid car parking area rather than grass and trees and beauty; but a Mansion for one family compared to a great University for so many.....I vote for the University.

One fatal move and it all ends. Must have been a remarkable job to move, but I suppose it ended with prospects.

Being torn down is almost a crime in itself, but it went to a good cause.

I just hate to see these old structures messed with, but it being used is a much more attractive plan then it being torn down from a lack of use. Now thousands of people get to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing a cool piece of history.

I first have to laugh at your bit about the Avon lady.

It is a stunning picture that you have painted. I love mansions such as these grand beauties.
