I'm not really sure because it depends on what's going on around the family.  I'm thinking if there were already problems in the family this could make it worse.  I think in order for it to be therapeutic the family would most certainly have to be mild-mannered. If they had a tendency to fly off the handle it really could get ugly.

I guess that it would depend on the threat and who it is against.

If the couple forms a united front then it is probably therapeutic for them, but whoever they are fighting against, maybe not so much.

Interesting story. Yes, I think removing threats is good.
