Re:

I think Ciel that these kind of teachers no longer exist. My mother said the teacher  in the village schooi, would examine a lesson and pinch the child's arm if it was not satisfactory..

Oh, the things that are done to children out of some bizarre notions that they have to be broken like horses, in order to civilize them. It makes me heartsick, and very very glad that this is no longer the general idea of what kids are, that they are whole people, even when very young.

Re: I have never heard of cigarette cards, so I looked them up.

Yes most kids collected them early days, Of course smoking was not frowned upon I even grew my own tobacco once although it was really against the law.

Re: Re: Corbin

Yes amazing what collectors would pay for a rarity.

Re: Anniicita

Yes A. some were really over the top.  This one years later asked my father, if I could supply her with a nice fat chicken. Her memory was shorter than mine.

Teachers can make or break a student. I know they were good at shaming us as well in the catholic schools.

Re: I have never heard of cigarette cards, so I looked them up.

They evolved into bubblegum cards  (to protect the kids)  I traded my neighbor to get an original Babe Ruth card for my Mickey Mantle....later on I sold it for $700.   I applied it to the down payment of my first car when I was 16.

This was an interesting time in life.

I can only imagine how important something like a simple card would have been to a child.

I have never heard of cigarette cards, so I looked them up.

Ironically, the most valuable cigarette card ever sold at auction is the T206 Honus Wagner baseball card. The card, issued by the American Tobacco Company between 1909 and 1911, depicting Pittsburgh Pirates' player Wagner, is also the rarest in the world, with only 50 - 200 cards believed to have been produced.
