The alternative is stagnation... like fetid swamps and mummies.  

Once, visiting the Cliff Palace ruins at Mesa Verde, someone asked the park ranger why some of the descendents of the builders were not all happy about the preservation of the ruins. The reason is that in Puebloan culture, according to the ranger, all things should be permitted to end, and to return to the earth. So preservation is stagnation of a natural process.   Best question and answer I have ever heard in a National Park. Mainly because it had never occurred to me to doubt that this preservation of something so fascinating wasn't just wonderful.

Yes, it is a fact that the act of creation requires an act of destruction. And sometimes we decline to learn from small acts, only change when we absolutely have to.
