I think perhaps there may have been a confusion in perceived terms between respectability and status. A hundred years ago Theatre may not have equaled Anthro but these days - I would be pleased to know my child chose what makes him/her happy. Good for your children and you.

I expect quite a lot of children have been steered into what their parents fancied.
Things change so quickly these days I am sure you were on Charlie's side.

Re: sassyass,
These days it helps to have some background in anthropology, sociology, and psychology to sort out humans of any age or culture. Psychological pathology, too, considering all the nasty stuff creeping out from the woodwork.

Re: Pat,
I think that quote might be RL Stephenson...
I always trusted my kids to find their own best paths without too much parental interference. It has worked out well for all of them, I believe.

The study of humans is somewhat fascinating, but in this day, who in the hell can figure them out? Real skills that come from using your hands is simply the most rewarding.

"The world is so full of a number of things,
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings." From my Old Mother Goose book of nursery rhymes. (Sorry, don't remember what poet gets the credit for this quote.) I read somewhere once that people have such varied interests and desires that if everyone got to do exactly the job they wanted, everything would get done. Good on you for not pushing your son into a job he'd never really like.
