Re: Pat,

I find that soup is a great food for flavor and for taking off weight.  That's broth soups more than creamy ones, and I usually add to whatever comes out of the can--which is usually Progresso. I really like their lentil, and add leeks to it. My mom used to put little smokey sausages in, too.

Some of the frozen meals I like, too, but they don't fill me up at all, and I end up snacking more.

And sometimes I just don't feel like bothering, and have a supply of slim-fast type meal replacement drinks. Like, now, at 6ish am, when I wake really hungry and still half asleep...

Never dared to roast a chicken from frozen. Don't do much inventive

cooking these days - mostly just scramble and egg or put a frozen meal in the microwave. Trying to take off a couple more pounds, and if the food is too good I'll be reaching for seconds, plus.

Re: RPresta,

The key thing is low temperature: 250 is good, and several hours. This was a 5.11lb bird, and cooked in about 4 hours, I think. I put it in as soon as I can unwrap it and get all the packaging off it, then bring it out partway through to pull the giblet packet out of the middle. Then, without bread stuffing--I put a big onion in there this time--it moves right along to done.

Re: TAPS,

Charlie made that turkey prop for a local production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL... it now hangs in his house somewhere. If I can get him to bring it out, I will get pictures...

Dinner sounds great! Are you accepting guests today. Like me? Just kidding.

I have never cooked a chicken that was frozen but I'd love to know how to do so. One Thanksgiving many years ago apparently the turkey didn't thraw inside, or some freak fluke occurred, because no matter what, that turkey would not cook inside. We ended up having to go out to get something!  It was so strange.

I've never tried roasting any bird from frozen.  I usually don't buy a bird until I am ready to cook one so it never gets frozen in the first place.  That was a problem with Thanksgiving turkeys.  I always liked "A Christmas Carol" because they had a big turkey hanging at the poulterer's--still there on Christmas day.  I assumed it was still alive and Mrs. Crachet had a big job ahead of her killing, plucking, cleaning and cooking it.
