Thanks C C T, these writers have their own styles, whims and fancies and just leave the stories at a point where it evokes a lot of interpretations and even dissatisfaction. So I feel .

It always seemed rather cruel to me. I suppose he wanted the image to remain.

It would have been nice if she had sailed into oblivion and just left her image on the water. Nevertheless there is much cruelty felt through or formed by oneself if this emotion is not gratified. I like your explanation best though.
