The thing most modern (post Disney) Americans forget is Mermaids and faeries are very creepy! The were maleviolent critters that had no love for humans, and for that matter very little reason to love humans. Throughout history the "OTHER WORLD" has sought to enslave or destroy humankind. Mermaids lured ships onto reefs and shoals, faeries stole children and drove young men and women mad with longing for faerie music and faerie magic. I love old tales because they were so rich in subtle terror - the most terrible kind of terror. I truely believe nothing burns hotter than the human facination with the dangerous and the unknown.
