Great question. It would take a long time for me to answer as nicely as you did here. As an aside, I only wish to say that a friend of mine from Argentina once said that he considers himself also to be an American, as do many in as South America, as they are also part of the Americas. Canada, Mexico and Greenland are also part of North America, so their citizens may be referred to as Americans, too.

But in your context, the US American, I understand your meaning. I usually try to refer to myself as a citizen of the U.S. To be from the USA is still a privilege and an honor, as long as we behave in an honorable fashion. It's a blessing to live here, and to come from this land of opportunity. Sure, we must fix the things that need fixing. But, heck, look how many people are still trying to come here. Thank you.
