Very interestingly put, GM. As you say the 'higher self', the soul, and our consciousness, are the ones that are bodily and heavenly.... the two have to be coalesced and merged, but it is a very difficult but possible penance, where the body gets heated up in Tapasya. Tap, meaning heat, what in English would roughly translate as mortification, a customary practice during Lent. I'll try and sequentialize my undestanding in one of the posts, and it'll be interesting to see your viewpoints side by side. Cheers

Re: Anib

..... and so, to complete my larger thought and connect with yours..... the closer linking or reunion of my individual 'lower self' with my 'higher self' is a type of "Oneness" that I definitely support and even yearn for.  But this is far different than the "Oneness" of my post,  which puts ALL of us together as wayward pieces of God, and causes all the problems and errors that I described in my post.  I keep God separate from myself,  and do not arrogantly presume to be part of him/her/it.  We are as far removed from God, and below God, as a bacteria or virus is below us.  The sheer arrogance of these new prophets of Oneness is appallling to me...... as you will see in my next post.

How very interesting that you should bring up the idea of a 'lower self' and 'higher self'!!  There are a few different ways to look at this.  In your earlier post, you were telling us of the egotistical 'I' and the higher 'thou', which is trying to overcome and counter the egregious errors of the ego.  The famous psychologist Sigmund Freud started this general view in the 1800's, I think, with constructs he called the 'ego', the 'superego' and the 'id'.  But I cannot remember the details of that, and I don't have time to go back and look at it, in the moment.  I believe Freud did believe in reincarnation, but I am not sure of that either.  I am sure the Hindu teachings have this idea in some form.

I do agree with the idea that we are not homogenous beings.  We are conflicted, with parts of our personalities working against each other.  This is represented in popular culture by a little devil sitting on one shoulder and whispering into our ear, and a little angel sitting on the other shoulder and whispering into the other ear.

New Age teachings have a fascinating take on this subject.  As a soul or spiritual entity, we are indeed split into two parts.  The lower self is that part of our soul that is linked directly with our physical human body, in the Earthly arena of struggle, trying to advance itself on the physical plane and work out failings and errors of the past.  This lower self remembers nothing of its spiritual life.  The 'higher self' is that part of our soul or spirit that is not shackled the body, remains in the higher spiritual realm (heaven, as it were), remembers past lives, and works to advance in the spiritual plane.  The 'percentage' of our total being or energy that is shackled to our current body can vary, and is decided according to anticipated needs before the birth of the current body. This concept feels right to me for some reason, and it is very encouraging to think that there is a higher part of me, that is not locked into my Earthly body, that is not entangled and embroiled in this crazy and dangerous planet.  I have even begun to include my 'higher self' in my prayers, asking for a little more energy down here, a little more help, if my 'higher self' could look down for a moment from his serene cloud, to see the predicaments I am locked into.  I am even a little angry at him, that he doesn't seem to be responding in any way that I can tell.  I guess it is kind of like a sibling rivalry, but as twin brothers that share the same total energy and soul, that share the same past and memories. I sure hope my 'higher self' is making the best use of his part of our energy up there, because I sure could use some of it down here!!

Hello dear friend GM,

I read the article with great interest, and you've so well articulated the difference. Somehow, this idea of Oneness, as you say, easily incorporates the evil and the good, and that its failure. Naturally it has to, because the Oneness you mean is through a sense of plurality. Whereas in my own case, I find that there is a lower self in me guided by my desires, goaded by self-aggrandizement, by my wish to lord it over things, etc. These are impurities that lead us to do evil deeds. So, firstly, to attain to Oneness, one needs to purify one's lower self. And mind you, it's no easy job. It needs tremendous dedication and resolve. All these are too detailed to give here as a comment, so I'll give a post on the subject. You may refer to Ch. 6 of the Bhagaved Gita, titled Dhyana Yoga. You will find exactly what you have differentiated in your write-up. I am once again trying to concentrate and unite my lower self with the higher Self. I don't know whether I'll ever attain in this lifetime, but the effort should not be wanting from my side. When one is able to, through constant practice, make the lower to merge with the higher, he is One with himself. This is imho, a submission for Oneness. But then I do find I am now not the one who used to be earlier. Cheers
