It can, and probably will get much worse. The benign 'socialism' rising among young people today (and some of it is not benign, but violent) shares it's philosophy with the former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a complete farce of a name). In Stalin's bloody heyday of persecution and slaughter, he allowed millions of Ukrainians to starve to death. There were outspoken liberal democrats in the US who idolized Stalin, and said that the starvation was not happening, that it was Western propaganda. FDR and other liberals called Stalin "Uncle Joe", when he became allies with Russia in WWII. FDR also admired certain ideas and tactics of Hitler.
So, like I said, it will probably get much worse, if this 'socialism' gains any more power in the US. Because if you don't agree with them, they will use that power to stifle you or destroy you.
