I hope Mary gets out of prison...So many kids do become unrecogniable mentally or physically to their parents over the years.

Re: Great story! Sad circumstance, OMG!

Of course Pat every young  American man looked smart in uniform. The girls were stuck with a few odd local failed medical chaps. A bit different for some who married the dream.

The Queen Mary sailed with the brides to U.S.A. One of my aunts lived in Coventry she said they never really slept for a fortnight as it was bombed nightly.

Re: CCT - Well told.

Well RP the POW's  did not want to go back. It was much safer in England I think the Germans probably worked on a farm, lived in a cottage and were accepted by the locals.

Of course some were only conscripts themselves. The Aunt was a victim of former circumstances. Most things have a reason in history. Thank you.

Re: Taps

Yes it is easy to overspend, especially if one has no experience of harder times.

Re: shamasehar

Yes even I a rather  ordinary boy of 13 in those times, thought I might have to fight if the worse happened.  Couldn't really blame the Aunt as a little girl she wore a patch over one eye her Dad did not seem over fond of her as my mother was his favorite. Also if one is reared when food shortage was present through lack of money one has the potential for a disturbed person.

Poor Mary.... mislead by cards  That holiday was a terrible one but circumstances make people behave in different ways.... war leaves behind so many scars. Was watching The Great Escape the other day on TV, it's hard to believe that prisoners actually attempted such a daring act but again circumstances can give you courage too.

LOL on the first one.  I was reading just today about the credit cards we use dealing in imaginary money.   Yikes.

CCT - Well told.

I always enjoy the Mary poems. What a terror of an experience at your aunt's place. How is it they let German POWs cut children's hair? I've never heard that. So sorry you had to endure a wartime childhood. Life has challenges enough without that!

Great story! Sad circumstance, OMG!

For a time in our class here at The Center we had a Manchester girl - she'd married a Yank - has given us many stories of the blitz and how it was in London that none of us would ever have gotten from the news or history books. Stories from the real people, the ordinary everyday folks who lived it are rare - and if the story teller is as wonderfully full of the details as you are, they really "stick to the ribs."  Thank you!
