Perhaps writers attempt to compensate for what they see and perceive to be a lack of fairness in their world.

Some times it takes generations before there is a reasonable balance within certain groups of people or families. I don't know why. I have always felt that I was born under a bright star... just bright enough for me to endure a lot of tough/rough times, have no fame and a small amount of money, enough to never be hungry or suffer.

my brother, a comedian and I used to discuss "what ifs" a lot. And no life is not fair. Lots of disparities.
