My paternal grandfather used to have a big garden behind the house. He would grow watermelon, tomatos and pumpkins. As a prank on a neighbor, he bought a megahuge pumpkin and stuck it in the garden. The neighbor knew better.

Oh! I could not bear to read this. Why did you not put it in your porch or isn't there bearly enough room. i know you are a one tomato person a bit different than down under. Just reminds me I knew a man who worked on the sewage works.I guess some of it was spread on adjacent ground. He always came home with bags of tomatoes in the summer. They looked quite juicy.

You still have the joy of knowing you made a bear very happy with your gift of tomatoes!

Greenish ones, by the way, taste a lot like lemons and can really spark up a recipe!

Kabu

Oh, how frightening with bear paw tracks around! I would not want to attract the bears! Here, it's the same, not with bears but bunnies, birds and rats! So no tomatotes, only my herbs and spices. Your flowers are beautiful.

Squirrels get them here, and deer at P.J.'s.    The apple trees are loaded with little green apples and the deer are there every morning eating the ones they can reach before they are ready for human consumption by humans.

I understand squirrels also love tomatoes - (I know from personal

experience they like strawberries.)  All the birds seem to love berries, so unless you've got netting to cover them, you'll be lucky to get even one taste. Mama used to plant nasturtiums around her veggie garden - she said the critters don't like the scent and will stay away.

We used to have full gardens...Joe even had an herb garden laid out...  But we had lots of trouble from deer...they loved everything in the garden except the corn.  And for those who say it's cheaper....NOT!  especially when you count the man-hours of work!  Krogers is my garden of choice.....
