Interesting questions, dear Corbin.... And funny, too.
One of my HS English teachers explained that our language came to be when men were the only ones who learned to read and write, when males were recognized as full-fledged persons at adulthood while females were never quite so. Gender specific nouns used to refer to humanity in general have come into question and contention as women challenge established standard operating procedure. Some writers have taken to using "she" and "her" as a primary noun when referring to people in general. Seems to me clarity is the point.
