I don't know that this quote is racist, but it was the prevailing line of
thought among the grownup conversations this "little pitcher" overheard in the 1940s - among the Americans of European descent in my mother's circle of family & friends. At that time I was unaware of any other cultures. It was WWII or right afterward, the Japanese had been removed to the camps, anybody with a German surname either claimed to be Swiss or loudly disavowed the Nazis, and the Mexican and Native Americans in the area kept to themselves. That was then. This is now, and I like to think we've learned a thing or two since Teddy R. and his cousin Franklin were the millionaires in charge.
