Usually it's strict religious definitions that keep people from being more tolerant. I try to stay hopeful that the world is getting more enlightened but people still surprise me with their ignorance every day.

Agreeing with you...
Some People think they have the absolute truth about what marriage is 'supposed to be' according to the tunnel-vision of their particular idea of God. They just don't get that it is a cultural thing, defined by humans for human purposes, which vary widely around the world.

These days marriage (as far as the state is concerned) is about legal rights, such as inheritance, who is next of kin in a medical emergency, division of property in case of separation, custody of any children, etc. Many who object to same sex marriages still think of it as a sacrament designed to formalize a loving relationship and procreation. If a couple decides to work their way through the obstacle course of this world together, I can only wish them well.
