You have pointed out that so often students, and non-students alike, may suffer from clinical depression and it is not noticed because they are functioning in society. But that doesn't help their pain.

That's the prob., sometimes what is taken for aloofness is sometimes depression. . Although one can usually tell if girls are interested. I mean you are a good catch .Your own house a good job and not a bottom smacker. Times change it appears they were all at it a few years ago if they had a bit of power. Just something there are thousands of young men 20-30plus living with parents. Can't afford a mortgage, or have not got the incentive to be home builders. Where I live a ordinary twenty year semi 300K that's a lot of dollars and if the rates move up it will be curtains. It happened about thirty ears ago.
Folk were posting the keys through the letter box and vanishing.
