Which makes me even more sure I wouldn't enjoy it. I have turned off movies because of their doom and gloom even if the story is good. Maybe the real world events have created a feeling of 'overdose'. I much prefer the silly.

Yes one has to be careful not to over-egg the pudding. Also I don't like too many characters, although sometimes I expect they are pulled in when there is a lack of inspiration.

Oh, I didn't make myself clear. The rain and gloom was in the story, the background details designed to set the mood of sadness... But in this case it was overdone.

Not a good sign if rain can distract you from the story. When reading a good book, all sorts of things can happen around me and I'd wouldn't even notice.

I know that my writing is too minimalistic and my editor gets me to fill in some details but I agree with you. I just skip all that fill in.
