My grandmother had some nice china.  I sold it because I really didn't need it.  If I had a family of my own though I would have probably kept it.

As someone who has a degree in history, I appreciate antinques. In my mother's basement is my paternal great-grandmothers sewing machine. It is amazing how huge they were back in the day.

I thought I would be clever I bought copper kettles quite old made by blacksmiths as they had been made in two halves . Now one can hardly give copper or brass ornaments away. It is so bad that house clearance firms charge for moving contents of even old fashioned bric-a-brac. It seems no one wants to polish and shine anymore.

Re: Re: RP

Thanks RP!  I've considered making a box for each of them with many of the figurines and nice things that will remind them of their favorite grandma.  They can't use them for a while... but maybe once they have their own apartments.

I actually tried sharing with my sister-in-law (my brother could care less about this stuff) because ultimately my mom wanted her granddaughters to have some of the stuff, but she refused to take any of it.

I think I developed a dislike for china when I was obliged to dust each little piece, every week, that was in my grandma's china cabinet, which stood in the corner of a seldom-used dining room. I hated dusting - it kept me inside.

Re: BC

Why not consider keeping some of it for your niece? One day she or her children may want it and treasure it.

There are some nice antique stores here in Kansas City that are a lot of fun to browse through.

Oh, I just packed up a whole set of china, and beautiful dishes, and crystal stemware and all kinds of beautiful things from my mom's house.... there's no way I can use all of it (and anything that can't go in the dishwasher is a definite no).

I'm keeping some... and will try to offer the rest to friends and family... or ebay it.  For now, it's all boxed up and sitting in my basement.

Kabu

I used to go antiquing all the time but no longer do that. I loved the old china but you're right, they all are minimalist now, it seems, and most don't want the older stuff.

Sooner or later someone who makes their living recycling old stuff

like those salvage guys on HGTV, will come begging to pick through your barn, shed, garage, etc., and they will want those gadgets, signs, doo-dads, thing-a-ma-bobs and whatcha-callits.  They'll be marketed as retro items and they'll make ten times what they pay you for them, but you'll make ten times what you paid for them...
