thanks... it definitely is horrid but I'm positive she will be fine.  This might not be the best way to prepare myself but my concern is for her, not me.

It's horrid, imho, and there's no way to sugar-coat it. It's just good that you are there for her.

I am glad that you are there for Mary during what is an extremely difficult time in her life...I find that I have learned many things from different age demographics.

I remember visiting in a female cancer ward with a friend, when she went into the consultation room the couple left were making jokes and appeared quite happy. I thought at least his wife is not as terrified as my nervous friend is. When his wife was called in, the husband said to me I dread driving home she will be sobbing her heart out all the way. It is a job to be brave all the time.
