Ah now I have one
I just saw a news story that elevates this argument to new levels of extreme absurdity. The Southern Poverty Law Center has released a list of over 1,500 monuments that support the Confederacy somehow. They say all these monuments should be 'taken down' or one would assume, renamed. Trouble is, their list includes schools, towns, counties, and Army bases!! Such as Fort Hood and Fort Bragg.
I live about 60 miles from Fort Hood, have been there several times. I never really knew or cared who it was named after. Now, with all this fuss, I researched it and found that it is, indeed, named after a Confederate general. If it weren't for the SPLC, I would have happily lived my life without ever knowing this little fact.
I would also have been perfectly happy if I had never heard of the SPLC!!
Again, their extremism reminds me of ISIS and the Taliban in the Middle East. It also reminds me of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, who wiped out everything and everyone who reminded them of the West. They started the calendar over at year zero, they arrested and killed anyone who wore glasses.
Whether violent or non-violent, wiping out history is just wrong.
