Your solution is of course correct! But so is mine...
I start with two empty pots!
Fill the 3 pint pot and empty it into the 5 pint pot.
Fill the 3 pint pot again and fill up the 5 pint pot, leaving 1 pint in the 3 pint pot.
Empty the 5 pint pot - use the water for your roses.
Pour the remaining 1 pint into the 5 pint pot, fill up the 3 pint pot again and empty it into the 5 pint pot. Now you've got 4 pints in the 5 pint pot.
And I'd prefer the top half of that bear, but I'll take the bottom half...
