It was late, and I thought you wanted 1 pint, not 4 - but you've got your 4 now!

I guess I never looked at the question again, LOL. So: After you are left with 1 pint in the 3 pint pot, as I explained, you pour that into the 5 pint pot and add another 3 pint pot full to that! So now you've got 4 pints in the 5 pint pot! Happy now? And I want my teddy bear!!!

Re: Re RPresta
Okay - final answer: you simply get a four pint container and pour away!

What do you mean 'no one got it right'? I did! You pour 3 pints from the 3 pint pot into the 5 pint pot, than you fill the 3 pint pot again and fill up the 5 pint pot from that, obviously using 2 pints since there are already 3 pints in that one. Having filled the 5 pint pot, you now have 1 pint left in the 3 pint pot, which was what was wanted. Maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough - it was late at night! And I'm claiming my prize!!!

I just thought of it the way Presta thought. 5+3 = 8. Divided it by 2 to get two equal glasses of 4 pints each. The last line of your poem put the perspective right

Re: C_C_T
Note: The puzzle didh't say wheher or not each container was full; just how much much it contained and each was 3 pint and 5 pint container. Holding that amount would make a container a 3 pint contaiher and a 5, respectively. But even if one assumes each container was full, the puzzle didn't say that one could not use a 3rd container and then half them, thus getting your 4 pints. Not correct? Oh well...

I'd pour the 3 into the 5, making 8, and then pour half into each container. Now I will look at the other's answers. I like your poem. It was cute with a different ending than I would have expected.

That puzzle is easily solved. You empty your 5 pint pot and fill it with 3 pints from the 3 pint pot. Now you fill your 3 pint pot again and fill the 5 pint pot to the brim, obviously using 2 pints. Which means you now have 1 pint left in the 3 pint pot - and Bob's your uncle...

There was a very popular Saturday Morning show on NPR
(National Public Radio) called "Car Talk." Still playing re-runs of the show these days after one of the brothers who hosted the show passed away - as the "Best of Car Talk." They frequently posed puzzlers exactly like the one you just did about the water containers. They presented as just your average grease monkey mechanics, but were MIT grads with science backgrounds and some amazing philosophical ideas - very much like the things posted on your blog, Dear CCT!
