It sounds just like ours except the destination was Phoenix, AZ through TX and NM in August.  I wish my Mom had thought about the string beans and the pea pods.  Now and then we would stop at a produce truck and buy corn on the cob.  We would find a shaded roadside area, build a fire and roast the corn and eat it while sitting in the dirt or on a rock.

Well little things meant a lot, we used to sit in deck chairs as it rained begrudging paying the collectors who seemed to come every twenty minutes. Being treated to iced custard in a cake wrapper which was erroneously called ice cream. Fervently hoping we would have less than two punctures on the homeward journey. Also other things too horrible to mention if there was no water closet.

I recall my brother and I fighting over the amount of time we each would get to lay down and sleep across the backseat while the other scooted up to lean between the front seats.... today, I guess the punishment for having electronic devices is that you have to stay sitting upright and buckled in.  ;)

My sons would second your post here except that we usually drove hald or more of the trip through the night so they could sleep The A/c in the car was a wetted towel flapping in a opened window but a few minutes and it had to be replaced.

|No not heading south in the USA mate...across the Aussie desert from NSW to South Australia where the beach was perfect.

Re: Riff's Room...

Oh, this is such a fabulous, funny, and oh-so-true post! Yep, I remember that stuff. Now try going down Lombard Street in SF with 2 younger sibs while a g-uncle who taught himself how to drive, drove a stick shift (three on the floor) straight downhill. It was the first E-ticket ride! Love it. Great post!
