The blue flowers, the peas all came to life in your fine-told narrative poem. Well done, Sir.

Re: Taps

I remember years ago my Mum was on holiday in Devon and there was a hedge of some flowering plant. An old lady was in the garden. Mum asked if she could have a slip because she would like to plant it.The lady looked a bit old at her and said 'Well you did ask everybody just breaks pieces off. i expect my Mum felt a bit reckless on holiday although she was always giving plants away at home.. You would not want to fall in a trench  for a while yet, I bet.

I fell into a trench like that once, on my back with the level slanted and my head downward and feet higher.  No one was around and I had a heck of a time getting out.  I was only trying to step over it.

How precious that she shared her flowers with you.  That more what we should all be like--sharing and giving what we have.

Re: Could it be English or Spanish bluebells?

I have actually looked through 250 photos of blue garden flowers Ciel. I am now pretty sure that it was a kind of campala sempervivium. I remember they had single bell like bell flowers but on short stems and I believe the leaves were slightly glossy. Anyway the clump she gave me did not grow, I expect I just stuck it into the soil. I suppose it was more the thrill of nicking a root that one enjoyed.

Re: FS

There was a great revival in gardening during the war years FS. Grow for Victory, Save our Sailors.

Re: Kabu

Yes I kept chopping a plant up I have just read that the bees love it so I guess it has been reprieved.

Re: Naut

Well in those days we were all in tune with the land smallholdings etc., Naut.

Not many ways to find entertainment. Yes perhaps she raced inside to see me tugging at her prized plants..

I'm sure the old lady's present was meant to keep a nice boy honest...And I would never have thought I'd find gardening adventures interesting, but I did...

Could it be English or Spanish bluebells?

When I visited in early spring a couple of years ago, there were patches of them spread like wall-to-wall carpetting in the woods.
