Good post here,  and good point.  However,  whether they were  "religious"  before or after they became Jihadists is of little concern to me.  Islam has easily qualified itself as the most dangerous religion in the world at the present time.  Otherwise,  why are we all talking and speculating about it and it's violent,  abusive teachings and followers?  In reality,  Islam has had the most violent and dangerous teachings and followers ever since the days of its founder,  Murdering Mohammed.  You can point to flare-ups in other religions,  such as the Christian Inquistion,  but that is ancient history,  and it was counter to Christian teachings.  Jihad is NOT counter to Islamic teachings,  it is central to them,  and always will be,  until they have a major reform movement,  like Christianity did.

Re:

I think it is similar to the attraction of gangs for some young people - a rebellion against the failures of society to be all inclusive with education and opportunity and thusly decent standards of living and for jihadis against the endless atrocities of war; albeit a very twisted and self serving and self defeating rebellion; a vicious circle in almost a literal sense. Gangs are about selling drugs and protecting the territory for doing so, jihadist groups are about bringing vengeance to those who have invaded, bombed, slaughtered and destroyed the homelands and peoples of Middle Eastern countries. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter..

Re: Hello Katray

Muslims were not involved in dropping nuclear bombs on Japanese civilians nor were they involved in the Oklahoma City bombing nor the massacre of young children at Sandy Hook Elementary School - all of these are modern day acts of terror that had nothing to do with Islam. So I must disagree but I do appreciate you reading and commenting..

Hello Katray

Muslims are a typical kind. Not that all Muslims are terrorists but in all acts of terrorism, Muslims are involved, invariably. It is true they become Jehadis first (holy war) and then turn into religionists. Their ancient Madarsa system ingrains in them a fanaticism that is then fanned by Jehadi teachings. All very effective, much more potent than the modernist system of education.

I believe it has to come from within their group and societies. They have to also feel accepted in their new countries.

Yes, Ma'am.We get better at this if we listen more than we speak: GOD gave

us two ears and a single mouth (One student at a school I worked at, once responded: See we have two lips!" Can't argue with that.

God is good; if we keep this in mind, & repeat it in our innermost beings, He calms EVERY storm. As I summarize the Bible: God is a good God; the devil's a bad devil; but Jesus is returning to show us perfect government & untold blessings if we believe Him. God is not a man that He should lie ...NUMBERS 23: 19 (Old Testament, yes!)
